What Is DTF Printing?

The Most Versatile
Print Technology Available

DTF Direct to Film is a modern print transfer process where your design is printed in full colour onto a special PET film using CMYK + white ink layers. A hot-melt adhesive powder is then applied and the design is heat-transferred onto the garment. Unlike sublimation, DTF works on any fabric cotton, polyester, nylon, blends, and even leather. Unlike screen printing, there are no screens to set up and no minimum colour limits. The result is a vibrant, durable, full-colour print that bonds directly to the fabric fibres.

How It Works

Our DTF Printing Process

From your artwork file to a finished, vibrant, full-colour printed garment a precise 5-stage process.

1
Step 01

Artwork Preparation

Your design file is colour-profiled and prepared for DTF output. We ensure correct resolution (minimum 300 DPI), accurate colour profiles, and a clean transparent cut path around the design edge so the transfer applies cleanly with no background box visible on the garment.

  • 300 DPI minimum resolution check
  • Colour profile conversion for DTF output
  • Clean transparent cut path confirmed
2
Step 02

Film Printing CMYK + White

Your design is printed onto a special PET release film using CMYK colour inks followed immediately by a white ink base layer. The white layer provides full opacity ensuring colours appear vivid and accurate on both light and dark fabrics.

  • CMYK colour layer printed first
  • Opaque white base layer printed on top
  • High-resolution DTF printer output
3
Step 03

Adhesive Powder & Curing

While the white ink is still wet, a hot-melt adhesive powder is applied evenly across the entire print. The film passes through a curing oven melting the powder into a smooth adhesive coating that bonds to any fabric type on heat transfer.

  • Hot-melt adhesive powder applied evenly
  • Oven-cured at precise temperature
  • Adhesive becomes the transfer bond layer
4
Step 04

Heat Transfer to Garment

The cured film is positioned precisely on the garment and pressed using a heat press at the correct temperature and pressure. Heat activates the adhesive and bonds the print permanently to the fabric fibres. The release film is then peeled away.

  • Precise placement on garment confirmed
  • Heat press at calibrated temperature & pressure
  • Release film peeled hot or cold peel per transfer type
5
Step 05

Quality Inspection & Finishing

Every DTF-printed garment is inspected for print clarity, colour accuracy, edge cleanliness, and bond strength before packing. Any piece that does not meet our quality standard is reprinted before dispatch.

  • Print clarity & colour accuracy check
  • Edge and adhesion quality inspection
  • Passed pieces packed & prepared for dispatch

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our DTF printing service.

What is the difference between DTF and DTG printing?+
DTG (Direct to Garment) prints ink directly onto the fabric surface and works best on 100% cotton. DTF (Direct to Film) prints onto a transfer film first, then heat-presses it onto the garment and works on any fabric type including polyester, nylon, and blends. DTF is also more durable and vibrant on a wider range of fabrics than DTG.
Is there a minimum order quantity for DTF?+
No strict minimum DTF is cost-effective from 1 piece upward as there are no screens or plates to set up. For very small quantities under 20 pieces, per-unit cost will be higher. Contact us for a quote at your required quantity.
What file format should I send for DTF printing?+
PNG files with a transparent background at 300 DPI or higher are ideal for DTF. AI, PSD, or PDF files are also accepted. The transparent background ensures the transfer cuts cleanly to the edge of your design without a white box showing on the garment.
How durable is DTF printing after washing?+
DTF prints are durable through 50+ wash cycles when cared for correctly — wash inside-out in cool water, avoid tumble drying on high heat, and do not iron directly on the print. The hot-melt adhesive creates a strong bond that resists cracking, peeling, and fading through regular use.
Can DTF print on dark-coloured garments?+
Yes this is one of DTF’s key advantages. The white ink base layer printed beneath the CMYK colours provides full opacity, ensuring accurate, vibrant colour reproduction on black, navy, dark grey, and any other dark fabric colour.
Can DTF be used for all-over printing?+
DTF is best for standard placement prints chest, back, sleeve. For seamless all-over prints covering the entire garment surface, sublimation printing on 100% polyester is the better choice. We advise on the best method for your specific design and fabric requirements.
