What Is Puff Printing?

Printing That Rises
Off the Fabric

Puff printing is a screen printing technique that uses a special expanding ink additive. When heat is applied during the curing process, the ink expands rising off the fabric surface to create a soft, raised, three-dimensional effect. The result is a tactile print that catches both the eye and the hand, communicating quality and craftsmanship in a way flat printing never can. It is especially popular for logos, bold lettering, and brand marks on hoodies, caps, and premium sportswear.

🔵

True 3D Raised Effect

Ink physically expands during heat curing creating a genuine raised surface texture that is visible and tangible.

Tactile Premium Feel

Customers notice the difference immediately puff printing elevates perceived garment quality with a single touch.

🎨

Combinable with Flat Print

Puff ink can be used selectively within a larger flat print design combining raised and flat elements in one decoration.

Which Is Right for You?

Puff Printing vs Flat Screen Printing

Both are screen printing techniques but they deliver a very different result. Here is how to choose.

🔵 Puff Printing Choose When You Want:

  • A raised, three-dimensional surface texture
  • Premium tactile feel that customers notice immediately
  • Logo or lettering that stands out visually and physically
  • A higher perceived value on your garment
  • Bold block logos and solid lettering designs

  • Fine detail, thin lines, and intricate design elements
  • Full CMYK or halftone photographic designs
  • Maximum colour range with precise Pantone matching
  • High-volume orders at the lowest cost per unit
  • Team kits, school wear, and standard branded garments
  • Raised or tactile design effect
  • Premium positioning requiring a 3D texture finish
How It Works

Our Puff Printing Process

From your logo file to a finished raised-print garment a precise, quality-controlled process at every stage.

1
Step 01

Artwork Review & Puff Suitability Check

We review your artwork for puff printing suitability checking line weights, detail level, and design structure. We advise on any adjustments needed to maximise the puff effect and ensure clean results after ink expansion.

  • Minimum line weight confirmation
  • Design simplification advice if needed
  • Puff height & technique selection
2
Step 02

Screen Production & Ink Mixing

Screens are produced from your approved artwork. Puff additive is blended into the ink at the correct ratio for the desired raise height too little and the effect is subtle; too much and edge definition is compromised. Our print team calibrates the mix precisely.

  • Puff additive blended at correct ratio
  • Ink colour matched to your specification
  • Separate screen for each colour
3
Step 03

Strike-Off Sample & Puff Height Approval

A test print is produced on the actual garment fabric and heat-cured so you can see and feel the exact puff height, colour, and finish before bulk production. We do not proceed until you are satisfied.

  • Physical cured sample produced
  • Puff height, colour & placement reviewed
  • Client approval required before bulk
4
Step 04

Bulk Puff Printing

Garments are loaded onto the printing carousel and puff ink is applied through the screens. For combo designs, flat layers are printed first, then puff layers applied on top. Each layer is flash-cured in sequence to maintain registration accuracy.

  • Flat layers printed first (if combo design)
  • Puff layers applied in correct sequence
  • Flash-cure between layers for registration
5
Step 05

Final Cure, QC & Finishing

All printed garments pass through the conveyor dryer at the precise temperature that activates the puff expansion this is the critical curing stage. Every piece is inspected for consistent puff height, colour accuracy, and placement before packing.

  • Conveyor dryer at calibrated puff-cure temperature
  • Puff height consistency checked per piece
  • QC pass before packing & dispatch

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our puff printing service.

How raised does puff printing actually get?+
Standard puff printing raises the ink surface by approximately 1–3mm above the fabric. High-build puff can achieve up to 5mm+ with multiple layers. The exact height depends on the ink formulation, application thickness, and cure temperature we confirm the raise height on your strike-off sample before bulk production.
Is puff printing durable after washing?+
Yes. Properly cured puff printing is durable through regular washing. The raised texture softens very slightly over many washes but remains visible and intact. We recommend washing inside-out in cool water for maximum longevity of the puff effect.
What designs work best with puff printing?+
Bold, block logos and solid lettering work best for puff printing. Fine lines, small text, and intricate detail are not ideal the ink expansion can reduce edge sharpness on very fine elements. Our team reviews your artwork and advises on any adjustments needed before production.
Can puff printing be combined with flat screen printing?+
Yes and this is one of the most popular techniques we offer. A design can have certain elements printed flat and others printed with puff ink in the same decoration, creating a layered visual and tactile effect that looks highly premium.
What is the minimum order for puff printing?+
Our minimum order quantity for puff printing is 100 pieces per design. This accounts for screen setup and sample production costs. Contact us for a full pricing breakdown at your required quantity.
Does puff printing work on dark-coloured garments?+
Yes. For dark fabrics, we apply an opaque white or coloured base layer first, then apply the puff layer on top. This ensures the puff colour appears accurate and vivid on black, navy, and other dark garments the most common request from our clients.
