What Is DTG Printing?

Inkjet Printing Technology
Applied Directly to Fabric

DTG Direct to Garment uses a modified inkjet printing system to spray water-based CMYK inks directly onto the surface of the garment. The ink is absorbed into the fabric fibres and cured with heat becoming part of the fabric itself rather than sitting on top of it. The result is a print with photographic colour accuracy, smooth gradients, and an incredibly soft hand feel. DTG requires no screens, no colour limits, and no minimum order making it ideal for custom one-off pieces, sample production, and small-run personalised orders.

How It Works

Our DTG Printing Process

From your artwork file to a soft, vibrant, full-colour printed garment a precise, quality-controlled 5-stage process.

1
Step 01

Artwork Preparation & Colour Profiling

Your design is colour-profiled specifically for DTG output converting to the correct colour space, checking resolution (minimum 300 DPI), and configuring the white base layer for dark-fabric printing.

  • 300 DPI minimum resolution confirmed
  • Colour profile converted for DTG output
  • White base layer configured for dark fabrics
2
Step 02

Garment Pre-Treatment

For dark or coloured fabrics, garments are pre-treated with a liquid pre-treatment solution preparing the cotton fibres to accept the white ink base and ensuring it bonds correctly and cures to a smooth, even surface.

  • Pre-treatment applied evenly across print area
  • Garment heat-pressed to activate pre-treatment
  • Required for dark fabrics skipped on white or light garments
3
Step 03

DTG Printing

The garment is loaded flat onto the DTG printer platen and the design is printed directly white ink base first (for dark fabrics), followed immediately by the full CMYK colour layer. The printer jets thousands of micro-droplets of water-based ink into the fabric fibres with precision.

  • White base layer printed first (dark fabrics)
  • CMYK colour layer printed on top
  • High-resolution inkjet head photographic quality output
4
Step 04

Heat Curing

The printed garment passes through a conveyor dryer or heat tunnel curing the water-based inks at the precise temperature required to bond them permanently to the fabric fibres. Proper curing is critical to achieving maximum wash durability.

  • Conveyor dryer or heat press curing
  • Precise temperature and dwell time controlled
  • Ink permanently bonded to fabric fibres
5
Step 05

Quality Inspection & Finishing

Every DTG-printed garment is inspected for colour accuracy, print sharpness, coverage consistency, and hand feel before packing. Any piece that does not meet our standards is reprinted before dispatch.

  • Colour accuracy vs. approved design checked
  • Print edge sharpness and coverage inspected
  • Passed pieces folded, packed, and dispatched
Care Instructions

How to Care for DTG Prints

DTG prints are durable when cared for correctly. Share these guidelines with your customers to maximise print longevity.

🔄

Wash Inside-Out

Always turn the garment inside-out before washing protects the print from abrasion against other garments.

Cold Wash Only

Machine wash in cold water (30°C max) on a gentle cycle ; hot water accelerates ink breakdown and fading.

🚫

No High-Heat Tumble Dry

Air dry or tumble dry on low heat only high dryer temperatures can cause ink to crack or lift.

Do Not Iron the Print

Never iron directly on the DTG print iron inside-out or use a pressing cloth if pressing is needed.

🧹

Mild Detergent Only

Use a mild, colour-safe detergent without bleach or fabric softener — harsh chemicals break down the ink bond.

🌬

Air Dry Preferred

Air drying flat or hanging is the gentlest method extends print life significantly vs. machine drying.

🚫

No Dry Cleaning

Dry cleaning solvents are incompatible with water-based DTG inks always wet wash only.

First Wash Inside-Out Alone

For the very first wash, wash inside-out alone this sets the ink and removes any residual pre-treatment solution.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our DTG printing service.

What fabric works best for DTG printing?+
DTG printing works best on 100% cotton garments ring-spun cotton produces the sharpest, most vibrant results. Cotton-polyester blends (up to 50% polyester) also work well. Pure polyester is not ideal for DTG for polyester fabrics, DTF or sublimation are better options.
Can DTG print on dark-coloured garments?+
Yes. For dark fabrics, we first apply a pre-treatment solution and then print a white ink base layer before the CMYK colours ensuring accurate, vibrant colours on black, navy, dark grey, and other dark garments. Pre-treatment is an essential step for dark-fabric DTG printing.
What is the minimum order quantity for DTG?+
There is no minimum order quantity for DTG we can print as few as 1 piece. This makes DTG ideal for samples, one-off custom pieces, personalised orders, and small runs where other print methods would have uneconomical setup costs.
How many washes does a DTG print last?+
With proper care cold wash inside-out, mild detergent, air dry DTG prints maintain quality through 30 to 50+ wash cycles. Following the care guidelines significantly extends print life. We include care instructions with every DTG order.
What is the difference between DTG and DTF?+
DTG prints ink directly onto the fabric producing the softest hand feel and working best on 100% cotton. DTF prints onto a transfer film and heat-presses it onto the garment working on any fabric type with slightly better durability. DTG is softer; DTF is more versatile across fabric types.
What file format is best for DTG printing?+
PNG files with a transparent background at 300 DPI or higher are ideal for DTG. Transparent areas will be left unprinted with no white box around the design. PSD, AI, and PDF files are also accepted our team will prepare the file for DTG output from any format provided.
